An artist, teacher, exhibit designer and graphic designer, Bob Regier's creative career spanned over five decades. After retiring as professor of art emeritus at Bethel College (Kansas), Bob used emerging digital design technology to craft a series of illustrations of his favorite birds. He also turned to oil pastels as a physical medium, creating the works catalogued here.

Bob has donated an extensive collection of his work to Kauffman Museum, where he designed the award-winning permanent exhibit "Of Land and People," as well as many other special exhibits during a 30-year consulting relationship. Kauffman Museum collaborates with Prairy, a Kansas-based lifestyle brand, to further Bob's design legacy and to promote appreciation of the plains environment.

Artist Statement

Photography, graphic design, and studio work with soft pastels constitute the current range of my visual activity.

Most of my images, particularly when working with the pastel medium, are nourished by location -- the plains environment. It's the landscape that has been given to me, the place that provides my bearings. But representations of that place are not the inevitable result of nourishment. Rather, nourishment provides my visual vocabulary of color, luminosity, texture, space, rhythm, shape and pattern. I would hope that the work can be engaged on more than one level -- pure visual language, or oblique or direct allusions to our common, shared visual world of the central plains.

Certainly the greatest satisfaction comes when I sense that something in my work, whether it be pure visual language or shared visual experience, moves the viewer to a moment of heightened insight and awareness.
